Grounding, also known as earthing, describes the energy exchange which occurs when we are in direct skin contact with the Earth. The Earth is a negatively charged battery of sorts, from which free electrons flow generously and freely. We are meant to be in bare skin touch with the conductive earth beneath our feet to receive this flow of free electrons. When we take a walk on the beach, lay on grass or step bare-foot on concrete, our bodies instantly exchange an electrical charge with the Earth. The longer we spend grounding, the more beneficial the effects on our health and well-being.

There have been over twenty accepted scientific studies and reviews on grounding in peer-reviewed scientific journals, to date. From this body of research, here is some of what we know about the benefits and changes that occur in the body when grounding and why the combination with yoga is particularly beneficial.

Immediate Changes (within 4 seconds of Grounding with the Ohm Yoga Mat)

The electrical charge of your body equalizes with the charge of the Earth, infusing the body with much-needed and free electrons
Grounding calms the nervous system, increasing your parasympathetic, or calming, nervous response
Muscles that are tense and hyper toned from injury or fatigue begin to relax

After 30 – 120 minutes

Blood flows more freely, aiding circulation
Stress related to inflammation and hormone imbalance is reduced
Injury and immune-related inflammation is calmed considerably, providing pain relief
Improved heart rate variability occurs within the body (a reliable medical measurement of the level of relaxation)
Time of recovery from DOMS (delayed- onset muscle soreness) from strain and exercise is reduced
A more positive, relaxed mood is attained

The Long-term Effects of Regular Grounding

A consistently deeper and more restful sleep is experienced
Experience more energy during the day
Musculoskeletal pain, gastrointestinal discomfort, headaches, menstrual cramps and temporo-mandibular joint symptoms are alleviated
Free radicals in the body, a major cause of inflammation, are quelled
Shortened recovery time from muscular exertion

Grounding Protects Us From Inflammation

Among all of the health benefits that grounding provides, its ability to soothe chronic or ongoing inflammation in the body may be the most powerful. The function of inflammation in the body is to eliminate harmful bacteria, viruses, allergens, and irritants. We are most familiar with acute inflammation, which is experienced as redness, swelling, soreness and lack of joint or body mobility. Chronic inflammation is often the hidden cause of many ailments within the body. When acute inflammation continues, even after the harmful agents that triggered it have all been cleared is when we experience chronic inflammation. Soothing this hidden inflammation may be the most important thing one can do for long-term health and well-being.

Grounding defends us from the harmful impact of Electro-magnetic fields (EMFs)

The constant presence of electromagnetic fields, which are emitted by all electronic devices and appliances, especially signal-producing devices, can have a detrimental impact on our health by increasing our body voltage. That is to say, the higher the measured induced AC current within the body, the farther from homeostasis and optimal body system performance. Our bodies are bio-electric, and are thus subject to the various kinds of electric and electromagnetic fields around us. When we are grounded, we become part of the Earth’s field (far larger than those around us) and we repel the fields that impact our body. Grounding, contrary to some erroneous information, protects the human body from the harmful impact of outside fields on our bodies.

Grounding neutralizes harmful free radicals

All of the body’s normal processes – breathing, circulating blood, digestion and metabolism – create free radicals. Free radicals are the remainder of these metabolic processes that are unstable, lacking an electron (therefore are positively charged) and often stealing that electron from molecules in healthy cells. That is the reason free radicals have been linked to ageing and various illnesses. Eating healthy, antioxidant rich foods like blueberries can certainly help, but the body is constantly in an uphill battle to eliminate these free radicals. Negative energy from the earth (in the form of free electrons) counters the accumulation of free radicals in the body with tremendous efficacy, neutralizing their charge and eliminating their harmful effects.

Grounding for good health

Grounding is a safe and effective practice which can have transformative effects on our health and well-being. Our earliest ancestors were in constant contact with the Earth (they walked and slept directly on the ground), and benefited from a direct connection with the Earth. We know today that simple elements – clean air, quality nutrients, clean water and restful sleep – can be the most beneficial for a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Grounding, our often lost connection with the Earth, is a critical component of healthy living. Moreover, yoga adds a profound dimension to our well-being. Numerous studies show the benefits of meditation, exercise, deep breathing, and a positive outlook for our health. Ohm Fitness aims to harness the power of grounding and yoga in an effort to bring wellness and good health to all.
